New Pianos Donated to Fresno City College Music Department to Celebrate Achievement

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The music department at Fresno City College is taking steps to leverage the musical excellence of its students, and a special delivery to the school has made that possible.

On Thursday, the teams brought a new Steinway piano to the school’s music department.

The Division of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts announced that the music department has been granted All-Steinway school status.

In addition to the Steinway grand piano, the Piano Store delivered two Boston upright pianos, all three handcrafted in the USA.

Music teacher Dr. Brandon Bascom says this opportunity will give students the best possible experience.

“Any of our students can access the best instruments anywhere in the world, so some of the pianos we replaced were over 100 years old – almost before the school. So to have a brand new Steinway piano, any student who takes a music class can play is amazing,” Bascom said.

Heyner Oviedo is the owner of the Fresno Steinway Piano Gallery.

He said, “98% of professional concert pianists choose to play on this type. Equipment is important. To have access to the best pianos in the world, these children will be able to express themselves and perform at the highest level.”

There will be a special concert on Friday May 20 at the OAB Auditorium to celebrate this milestone for the college.

This free concert will include the unveiling of the All-Steinway School plaque.
