New Hillsborough School business administrator chosen amid criminal investigation

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — No stranger to the Hillsborough Township School District, Gerald Eckert was unanimously named as the new business administrator/board secretary by the school board at Monday night’s meeting.

Eckert previously served as Assistant Corporate Administrator at Hillsborough from 2008-2014 before serving at Randolph Public Schools as Corporate Administrator/Secretary of the Board.

“Mr. Eckert brings to HTPS a keen sense of expertise in the areas of compliance and budgeting best practices. His unique expertise and highly professional demeanor will serve the District well,” the Acting Superintendent said, Dr. Kim Feltre.

The Hillsborough BOE had previously appointed Paul Roth as the new acting commercial administrator effective Tuesday January 11. Eckert will take over on May 1.

The new appointment follows an ongoing criminal investigation into the school district‘s finances by the Somerset County Attorney’s Office and Hillsborough Police.

On December 20, 2021, school affairs administrator Aiman Mahmoud abruptly resigned. Mahmoud had served as Academic Affairs Administrator/Secretary to the Board of Trustees at Hillsborough Central Office since January 21, 2008.

At the same special meeting, the school board also voted to put a member of the Central Office administrative staff on leave.

On December 22, 2021, the school’s superintendent, Dr. Lisa Antunes, resigned for “a short leave, effective immediately”. In her place, Deputy Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kim Feltre, is now Acting Superintendent until Antunes returns.

On January 3, 2022, Assistant Business Administrator Luisa Rodriguez resigns effective January 14. In addition, the council also voted for the change within it. The board elected Marini president and John Oliver vice-president.

At the same January 24 meeting, the board also took steps to fill other vacant temporary administrative positions. Dr. Tammy Jenkins, Principal of Sunnymead School, has been named Acting Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

Jenkins has served as a principal since 2004 and in 2017 was named National Distinguished Principal of the Year by the National Association of Principals and Visionary Principal of the Year by the New Jersey Principal and Supervisors Association.

While Jenkins serves as interim principal, Dr. Steven Jablonski will serve as interim principal of Sunnymead School. Jablonski has been a respected assistant principal at Hillsborough Secondary School since 2011 and previously served as acting principal at Woods Road School.

“We are grateful to have such a dedicated administrative team to fill these voids and we will work together to continue to provide the best possible education for our students,” said Michael Callahan, Director of Human Resources.
