Fires / Alarms / Hazardous Conditions

09/02 10:22 p.m. AFD responded to 3101 Winchester Ave. or a fire alarm. The alarm went off in an apartment on the 7th floor because of the kitchen. The alarm has been reset.

9/3 04:26 AFD responded at 3131 Winchester Ave. for a fire alarm. The alarm went off in a 2nd floor apartment due to a malfunction. The alarm has been reset.

9/3 12:34 AFD responded at 1221 Lexington Ave. for smoke in the building. After investigating, crews noticed lights going on and off in the building. Crews checked an HVAC unit on the roof and found the engine on fire. Electricity was attached to the building and the fire was extinguished with a fire extinguisher. AEP was notified and responded with building maintenance. The stage was handed over to them.

9/4 14:52 AFD responded at 3101 Winchester Ave. for a fire alarm. The alarm went off in an apartment on the 7th floor because of the kitchen. The alarm has been reset.

04/09 17:59 AFD responded to 818 Fair Franz Ct. for a tree that fell on a structure. Crews found the tree had struck a carport and an adjacent house. No utilities were involved and no major structural damage, other than the carport, was reported.

04/09 6:05 p.m. AFD responded to 1000 Block of Florida St. for a smoke investigation. No issues were found.

9/4 19:20 AFD intervened at 2205 Blackburn Ave. for a structural fire. Crews found heavy fire from the front of the structure upon arrival. Crews deployed lines and the main body of fire was knocked down within minutes. The fire started at the front of the house in a utility room. The structure sustained fire damage to the front with smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the structure. The cause was undetermined.

9/4 21:00 AFD responded at 713 Martin Luther King Blvd. for a smell of smoke in the structure. The teams ensured the electrical supply to the building. Crews also found individuals on the hillside behind the burning business. It was determined that the odor was caused by this issue. Utilities were turned back on and high levels of carbon monoxide became present in the building. Gas service has been secured and occupants have been advised to contact their maintenance personnel.

9/4 11:18 PM AFD responded at 3101 Winchester Ave. for a fire alarm. The alarm went off in a 1st floor apartment due to cooking. The alarm has been reset.

9/5 9:20 p.m. AFD responded at 3101 Winchester Ave. for a fire alarm. The alarm went off in an 8th floor apartment due to the kitchen. The alarm has been reset.

9/6 08:16 AFD responded at 3131 Winchester Ave. for a fire alarm. The alarm was activated in an apartment on the 4th floor due to the kitchen. The alarm has been reset.

9/6 13:17 AFD responded at 2516 Carter Ave. for a fire alarm. The alarm has been activated in a kitchen hood sensor due to a malfunction. The alarm has been reset.

9/7 17:32 AFD responded at 3101 Winchester Ave. for a fire alarm. The alarm was activated in a 9th floor apartment due to the kitchen. The alarm has been reset.

9/7 7:13 PM AFD responded to 609 Hagan Ct. for a carbon monoxide alarm. Crews investigated using air monitors and found no problems. The crews found that the smoke detectors were not working and replaced all the detectors in the residence.

9/7 20:32 AFD responded to 461 Riverhill Dr. for a fire alarm. The alarm went off in the restroom due to vaping. The alarm has been reset.

9/8 1:57 PM AFD responded to 4715 Nancy Ct. for a reported structural fire. Crews found sewer service smoke test drains in the area. Crews checked the residence and installed smoke detectors in the residence.

Motor vehicle accidents

9/3 14:01 AFD intervened at 1000 Greenup Ave. for an accident involving 2 vehicles. No injuries were reported. The teams participated in clearing the roadway.

9/4 19:43 AFD intervened on 15th St. and Carter Ave. for an accident involving 2 vehicles. The teams helped treat 1 injured person and clear the roadway.

9/6 16:56 AFD intervened at 5260 13th St. for an accident involving 2 vehicles with injuries. Crews helped treat the injured and clear the roadway.

Rescues

9/8 2:26 PM AFD responded at 1544 Winchester Ave. for occupants stuck in an elevator. Crews found the elevator stuck on the 3rd floor. Crews cut power and removed occupants from the elevator. The scene was turned over to building maintenance.

Emergency medical incidents

AFD responded to 6 emergency medical incidents resulting in the transport of 2 patients to hospital by the BCEMS.

AFD responded to 4 overdose incidents resulting in the transport of 3 patients to hospital by the BCEMS.

AFD intervened in 3 lifting assistance incidents.

AFD responded to 1 social control.

Public Service

AFD carried out 4 public service assistance interventions.

Fire prevention

AFD teams produced 8 business plans.

AFD’s Fire Prevention Office carried out 7 inspections and 3 consultations.

Fire Safety Message of the Week: Do You Wear Glasses or Hearing Aids? Keep them by your bed while you sleep so you can access them quickly in an emergency. Not seeing or hearing properly can slow you down or disorient you when trying to escape a fire.

Coaching

AFD has completed training on CPR recertifications, officer training and driver training.
