COLLINSVILLE, Miss. (WTOK) – All students were safely evacuated and discharged early after a small fire was quickly brought under control at West Lauderdale Middle School.
The fire started in a 5th grade classroom’s closet due to a heating unit hose failure, according to Lauderdale County Fire Coordinator Allan Dover.
The fire was put out with dry chemicals and part of the roof was cut out to ensure the fire didn’t spread, according to Dover.
Students in the classroom were evacuated in 48 seconds, according to Superintendent Dr. John-Mark Cain. Dr Cain said he was proud of the quick response from staff.
“All of our staff managed to get all of our students to come in less than a minute. Everyone has remained safe and calm, and we just appreciate their efforts. As you can see, emergency response was able to get here and really identify the source of the problem and deal with it. We feel good that no one was hurt, and we can fix this and get the school back to normal as soon as possible,” Cain said.
Dr Cain said they were working to determine where the students in the 5th grade middle school building would be at the moment. All the pipes of the heating systems of the other classrooms are examined as a precaution.
This is a developing story. News 11 will keep you posted.
